Last week, I was a hot-mess mom. It seemed like no matter what was happening, I couldn’t quite get it together. Ever had one of those weeks? I was wondering why I was so “off.” When I really sat down to evaluate it, I found the answer. I hadn’t followed through with my Sunday routine.
Because I hadn’t organized myself on Sunday, I was waking up each morning unprepared. It was a jumbled mess, and I just started each day off on the wrong foot. I couldn’t pull it together. One disorganized day turned into another, and I was left frustrated and frazzled all week long.
My Sunday Routine
Every Sunday, there’s a few thing that I do to get prepared for the week. Last Sunday’s prep didn’t happen and cue hot mess mom to fumble through the rest of the week.
If you feel like a hot mess mom, here are a few things you can do to make your week run smoothly.
1. Prep your clothes for entire week
I have a lovely little storage shelf in my kids’ bathroom. There is a shelf labeled for each day of the week. My kids have a packet of clothes in each bin. (I fold up the undies and socks inside the pants and wrap the shirt around the whole thing to make a neat little packet.) Save time and stress looking for socks and matching outfits by having the entire week’s worth of clothing prepped in advance. A bonus to this Sunday routine: there is always enough laundry done for the week if you’ve filled the bins!
Right now, I only do this clothing prep for the kids. Safe to say that it would make my week go even smoother if I took the time to set up my own clothes in advance for the week as well!
2. Meal Prep
Find what you can make ahead for meals, and prepare it on Sunday. I have to admit, I’m the last person you should be taking cooking advice from. There are a few things that I do to make my life easier throughout the week. For example, I make up breakfast burritos on Sunday and freeze them. That way I have a quick breakfast meal ready to grab and go throughout the week.
What can you prepare in advance on Sunday that will make things go smoother later in the week? Cut and wash fruit and veggies? Brown and freeze some hamburger? Think ahead and prep your meals.
3. Check your Schedule
There’s something to be said about knowing what’s coming your way each week. If you spend a few minutes on Sunday looking over what is coming up on your calendar, you can better prepare mentally as well as physically. That may prompt you to get your kids’ sports gear ready or buying that birthday present (in advance) for the party next weekend. You’ll feel more prepared and in control of your schedule and your life.
4. Review Your Goals
Take some time to review how you did last week on your goals. Take note on what held you back as well as what you did that helped you make progress toward your goals. Look forward to the week ahead and schedule one or two things that can move you forward in accomplishing your goals.
Life goes by so fast, sometimes it’s easy to let a week or two slip by not working on your goals. All of the sudden it turns into a month or two and you’re making the same New Year’s Resolutions/goals as you did last year. *sigh* DON’T let that happen to you! Take some time each week to review what you’re working toward.
5. Schedule in “Me” Time
Look at your schedule one more time, and pencil in some “me” time. Avoid CMS (Cranky-Mom-Syndrome), by giving back to yourself. Whether it’s reading a book, taking a bath, or scheduling in a much needed night out with the girls, carve out time for you! As moms, we tend to put ourselves last way too often. Be proactive in taking care of yourself. Schedule time to do something that makes you happy.
